Teaching Your Kids Proper Telephone Manners

I’m marking today’s date so in ten years (hopefully it will be that long) I can look back on September 12, 2008 and remember how blissfully uninterested my preschooler was in telephones. She knows what the device is used for and how and when to call 9-1-1, but beyond that she really has very little desire to use the phone (oh, how I wish I could freeze time) save for her occasional desire to answer it when it rings more than three times. In my last blog I spent time discussing tips parents can use to get young children acclimated … Continue reading

The Phone is Ringing!

The home phone (landline), my cell phone, and my husband’s cell phone are each ringing at this very moment. When you have kids, especially teens and ‘tweens, it may seem like the phone never stops ringing. Even if you don’t have kids, it may ring quite a bit. You might just begin hearing ring tones in your sleep! On that note, it’s a good idea to pick a ring tone that you really, really like. My cell phone rings all day while I’m at work, so I have a ton of voicemail by the end of the day. The home … Continue reading

Book Review: Bringing Asha Home

The long wait common in international adoptions can seem inconceivable to children. When their mother is pregnant, older children can see that the baby is there, see the mother’s belly growing and hear the baby’s heartbeat at the mother’s doctor visits. They can be given an approximate date for the baby’s arrival, or at least a general time frame like “just after next Valentine’s Day”. In an international adoption, there is no such certainty and no markers along the way. A children’s book which is unique in addressing this aspect of international adoption is Bringing Asha Home, by Uma Krishnaswami, … Continue reading

If you discover that you are spending less and less time with your spouse and that your … Continue reading

“Hang Up The Phone, We’re On Vacation”

If I had a dime for each time my sister-in-law spat those words out during our Easter vacation… I’d be rich. My two older brothers are cellphone addicts—they take their phones everywhere. I will admit their addiction grew (somewhat) out of necessity. One is a firefighter and the other is the spokesperson for the county’s Department of Emergency Management. So each carries at least two cellphones at all times. Which, of course, means that during our spring vacation there was nary a moment that went by when one of their phones was not ringing. (And frankly, I couldn’t blame them … Continue reading
